Hello and thank you for your interest in Butler University today. I will be talking with you about some general information that overviews our institution as well as specific academic programs that we have available here at Butler. And then I'll wrap up with a little bit about life on campus and the admission in financial aid process. First we will start with some of the general information that will be helpful as you begin or continue with your college search. As we look at a zoomed out view of Butler, you'll find some fast facts and statistics.
That may assist you in your college search process.
We currently have just under 5000 students enrolled here at Butler. You'll find that 5000 is a pretty unique number and were able to offer a balance between the big school and small school experiences in terms of that big school experience, we have Division One athletic programs, which means there's a lot of school spirit for our fellow Bulldogs. We also have a great location within the city of Indianapolis that lends itself to the big school experience. When you consider the classroom environment, however, you will find that you have a much more personalized classroom experience.
It's more reflective of a small school.
53% of Butler Bulldogs come from out of state where is 47 come from right here in the state of Indiana we represent 46 states in 30 eight countries with a multicultural. An international student population of 18%. That number typically increases every year and it is a priority for us at Butler. We're excited to be able to bring students from a variety of States and countries to our campus to share their unique perspectives and experiences.
In terms of that small school experience, you will find that in the classroom at Butler, the average class size is 21 and our students and faculty ratio is 11 to one. So you will have a personalized experience and you will get to know your professors. Even more importantly, your professors will get to know you and they will be there to support you. Your questions and concerns with big and small. You'll be more than just a number at Butler University, and we're very excited to hold the number one spot for the second year in a row.

In addition to the size of our classes were also really excited about what our students are learning in the classroom.
And that starts with the Liberal Arts Foundation, so the term liberal arts at Butler means that we want you to be a well rounded student and a well rounded person. This means that you'll take classes outside of your major and even across colleges in order to develop your critical thinking and communication skills. We do want you to develop even outside of your specific academic program. This doesn't mean that we're going to push you a little bit outside of your comfort zone, but please know that there is a variety of classes to choose from within each subject.
Area you will still be able to find course work that is interesting and exciting to you. The Liberal Arts Foundation which we refer to as the core curriculum makes up about 1/3 of the overall credits required for a student to graduate. The remaining 2/3 are built out how you choose. This will include your major, perhaps a double major or a minor.
I bought where it is very common for students to double major or out of minor, even across colleges at our institution. We want to work with you to ensure that you are taking the course work that is going to best meet your interest and your goals. At Butler, we have over 65 meters to choose from and they are spread out across six different colleges, so I will do next is walk you through each of the six colleges here at Butler will talk a little bit about the academic programs offered within each college. Please note that there are some additional programs.
I will have a chance to talk about today. Please feel free to contact the office of admission if you have additional questions following the presentation.
To start, we'll talk a little bit about the College of communication. This is Butler's newest and fastest growing college. It is home to major, such as communication Sciences and disorders, which is a great undergraduate program if you are interested in speech, language, pathology or audiology, we have speech and hearing clinics on our campus to help you gain some important experience prior to going on to a graduate program. The College of communication also houses are journalism program as well as sports media and some of our more technology focused programs.
Such as music industry studies.
We incorporate internship opportunities and other types of hands on experiences throughout your time in the College of communication there is an abundance of internship opportunities right here in the city of Indianapolis. We partner with local news stations, the Colts, the Pacers and other organizations to ensure that you have time to work in your field of choice. We also have state of the art studios right here on our campus so you will be able to work with the technology from the very beginning is as it is incorporated.
In your classes and post graduation, the College of communication has a 97% placement rate for its alums.
Up next is the College of Education. There are two main tracks within the College of Education. If you are interested in the traditional classroom experience, we do have both elementary education and Middle Secondary Education with Middle Secondary, you choose a content area, something such as math or science, and you study your content area classes alongside of your education classes.
All of our education students get into the classroom in the first few weeks of their very first semester on campus. We want to ensure that you see a variety of teaching styles and continue to build up the amount of time you spend in the classroom leading up to student teaching in your senior year.
For elementary education students, you will have up to 1500 supervised hours in the classroom, including a full year of student teaching. By the time you graduate or Middle Secondary students, you will have up to 750 supervised hours. An one full semester of full time student teaching under your belt. By the time that you graduate, Middle Secondary students do require a bit more time on Butler's campus as they complete their content area courses, but we will ensure that you feel confident in your field and running your own classroom.
If you are interested in working with young individuals, but perhaps not in the traditional classroom setting, we do have a new major in the College of Education, Youth and Community Development which allows for you to consider areas such as social work or the nonprofit sector as you help your community.
All of our students get hands-on opportunities, whether that is inside, of, or outside of the classroom, and we are sure to partner with various organizations and school districts throughout Indianapolis to ensure that hands-on experience and the College of Education has had a 100% placement rate for its graduates for over 15 years.
The College of pharmacy and Health Sciences houses both undergraduate and graduate programs are pharmacy program, for example, is a direct pathway program. This means that you apply as a pre pharmacy major while you are in high school. If you're admitted to the pre professional face, you will spend your first 2 years a Butler taking core curriculum requirements for the University as well as prerequisites for the pharmacy program. As long as you maintain the requirements for the program.
You will move directly into the professional phase and you will be at Butler for a total of 6 years. At the end of your six year, you'll graduate with your farm D.
We also have a Masters program and physician assistant studies. This Masters program is a separate program and does require an undergraduate degree. Health Sciences is a common option for students on the pre PA trap. However, how scientist is a rigorous human anatomy focus program designed for students with professional school goals so you could be looking at a PA program or medical school, perhaps a physical therapy program or even dental school. It's a flexible curriculum.
And we will work with you to ensure you are prepared for your professional program of choice. We incorporate a wide variety of clinical experience into our coursework both at the undergraduate into graduate levels. This has helped us achieve some successful first time pass rates or the necessary licensure in board exams required of those professional programs in an overall placement rate of 98%, four hour pharmacy graduates.
Up next is the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. There are 36 broke programs that span across this college. This is where you'll find are natural Sciences such as biology, biochemistry, an chemistry. This is also where we offer our social Sciences, including Criminology, Psychology and sociology.
This is also where we house our mathematics Department as well as interdisciplinary programs such as International Studies. And then there's also where you'll find our engineering dual degree program. Our engineering dual degree program partners with Purdue University School of engineering in the city of Indianapolis.
We ensure that you are enrolled at both institutions from the very beginning and you will graduate in five years with one degree from Butler. What can be in any type of math, science, or even music and then your engineering degree comes from Purdue. You are able to be in Indianapolis resident throughout the entire T of your experience in the engineering program, and you are first and foremost a Butler spent.
Many of our engineering students are natural Sciences and social Sciences. Students take advantage of research opportunities here at Butler. You are not limited to just programs in the College of liberal Arts and Sciences to participate in undergrad.
Butler University primarily serves undergraduate students, which means you will not be competing against grad students for research opportunities, so we have opportunities for our students to research one on one with faculty members to receive stipends for their work.
We also host our own undergraduate research conference on our campus every spring. This is not just for Butler students, typically 50 to 60 other institutions participate in this event, so you are able to interact with peers who are researching on similar topics and gain important presentation a'll skills related to your research and across all 36 programs within the College of liberal Arts and Sciences. Their graduates currently having 95% placement rate.
The Jordan College of the art houses the majors. For those of you who like to be on stage, so this includes dance, music, and theater. You will also find art plus design in this college, which is our visual arts program as well as Arts Administration, which is art with business focus. All of our programs in the Jordan College of the arts ticket Conservatory style approach to preparation, which means that you will be very well prepared in your particular art. While we also incorporate that liberal arts foundation that ensures you are still.
Well rounded individual taking course work outside of your major. If you plan to major in a program within the Jordan College of the arts, please know that there is a supplement to the application. If it is a performance based major such as dance, music or theater, you will be required to schedule an audition. If it is art plus designer Arts Administration, typically those majors require an interview an for art plus design. It would also incorporate a portfolio review.
We want to make sure that our students are well prepared for careers in the arts, so we do also partner with The Butler Community Art School where students have an opportunity to teach members of the community the music, the instrumental, the quarrel, or other skills that they may have. We also have amazing performance opportunities for students, an amazing facilities for those students to perform and not only can you enjoy these facilities as a performer.
Places such as clues Hall or Schrott Center for the arts are amazing spaces for audience members as well. As we mentioned some opportunities for non majors. I do want to talk a little bit about your opportunities for involvement. Even if you choose to major outside of the College of the arts, we have opportunities for both instrumental and choral ensemble participation as well as a marching band Basketball Pep Band, an acapella groups. There are also opportunities for non majors to participate in some of our theater productions.
Across the board are Jordan College of the arts has a 96% placement rate.
Last but not least is the Lacey School of Business. This is where you'll find major such as accounting, entrepreneurship and innovation, finance and marketing. All of our business students are enrolled in similar course work their first 2 years to really help get you in that business mindset. This program really takes of- during your sophomore year when you enroll in the real business experience class. Real business experience is structured a little bit like Shark Tank. You and your group will present an idea for a product.
Do a panel of faculty members to try and receive funding to go out and market that product. If your group is chosen, you are essentially executing a business plan from start to finish. This is a great way to prepare you for additional requirements throughout the lease. Is School of Business.
All business students are required to complete two internships. One is part time, one is full time. Both are usually paid. We have great connections here in the city of Indianapolis, but we're also happy to send students all over the country and even outside of the USA in some cases to complete their internship experiences.
Not only will you have the support of your professors during that internship internship search process, you will also receive the support of career mentors, so you will have a career mentor paired with you. Who specific role is to help you as you navigate key steps such as networking, an internship preparation and the Lacey School of Business. Both in 99% play straight.
As you consider all of your major options, I know that the process can be a bit overwhelming. Please know that there are options for those of you who are undecided at this point. Exploratory Studies is butlers undecided major. This is the most popular major for first year students, so please know that you are not alone in that decision making process. Exploratory study students have the opportunity to enroll in an exploratory studies class that specifically dedicates time to that decision making process.
Exploratory study students also received one on one academic advising support.
Participate in some self assessment including career, aptitude and personality tests and add you begin to narrow your decision a little bit further. You can attend a major fair to interact with professors an current students within the Department you're interested in in order to make an informed decision about your major. Please note that you do also have the opportunity to explore within certain colleges. For example, if you are interested in business, you're unsure of the specific business program that is the best fit for you. You can apply as an exploratory business major.
And take up to three full semesters to declare your major within the program. This is true for exploratory study students as well. All exploratory students, regardless of their program, are going to have the opportunity to take up to three full semesters. Make a decision regarding the major that they choose to declare.
Regardless of the major that you choose, every student Butler has access to the city of Indianapolis, the heart of downtown Indianapolis is only 5 miles from our campus, which means that we are very easily accessible in our students are able to take advantage of the fun and practical opportunities available in the city.
We are also nestled in a more quiet, an residential space in Indianapolis, so we're able to strike a balance between the big city and suburban fields. We are also working to ensure our students are able to access the city of Indianapolis. Butler University University provides bulldog shuttles that will take students to downtown Indianapolis, the Indianapolis International Airport, as well as Broad Ripple village, which is butlers college town.
We also allow students to bring their personal vehicles to campus, and there are public transportation options provided by the city of Indianapolis that also how stops on Butler's campus. So you will be able to navigate the city even without a personal vehicle.
It is pretty safe to say that Indianapolis is a fun place to live and go to college, but Luckily for Butler students it is also very practical place to go to school. We do want our students to graduate with experience and to feel confident in the fields that they have chosen.
One of the many ways that students gain experience is through internships.

Lastly 40% of Butler students gain experience through study abroad we have programs that span across 60 different countries.
You are also have the opportunity to participate in a semester long program that focuses on core curriculum and liberal arts items. This program is known as Gallup or global adventures in the liberal arts. This was a semester long program that allows you to take core curriculum classes in various countries of a particular region of the world throughout the semester, some of our programs are going to be groups where you study abroad with other Butler students.
And faculty, whereas others will be a more individualized program, so depending on your goals and your your schedule and the availability that you have to be away from campus, there's flexibility in the program that you choose. We even have opportunities for first year students to hit the ground running with study abroad. Are Bulldogs abroad program is a pre welcome week option for students to move into their residents. All of these experiences have helped us achieve some very exciting and successful results. the University currently boasts a 98% placement rate, So what that means is within six months of graduation, 98% of Butler graduate or either employed in a field related to their major or there in Graduate School.
As we wrap up today, I do want to talk a little bit about the admission process. I hope that you're excited about the prospect of attending Butler University, and I want to share more about how to make that a reality.
1st, I'll share with you about the academic profile. This gives you an idea of the middle 50% of students who were admitted last year. When we talk about the middle 50%. This is an idea of the typical Butler student, ECT. Typically a 24230 S 80 around 1162 and 1320 CPA between a 3.5 and a four point one, so with middle 50%. That means there are going to be students successfully admitted to Butler with test scores and GPA's.
Above and below these ranges, but the reason I highlight these numbers in particular is because it gives you a good idea of what it takes to be a competitive applicant for admission to many of our programs as well as academic scholarship eligibility.
As far as the application itself, we have our own Butler application. We also accept the common app. We do not have a preference which application method you cement to. Choose the one that's going to be easiest for you. Both application methods are free and require the exact same item. We will require a writing sample, test scores, image rain script when it comes to your writing sample. Please note that this is an opportunity for you to add some voice to your application to consider that as you choose your essay.
When it comes to your test scores, we do not have a preference between AC T, an essay TI would encourage you to take both us if you have the opportunity, as they are very different tests and some students do much better on one compared to the other. If you take either test multiple times, Please note that we do super score so it's in your best interest and all copies of your score report.
Super scoring means that we will recombine those sub scores even if they're from different test dates. To give you the best possible composite score. And we will use that super squared number not only for admission consideration but for academic scholarship calculation as well. When it comes to your transcript, we will be looking at your overall GPA as well as if friend of your GPA and your grades year to year. We will also consider the coursework that you've been taking and how you challenge yourself within the academic context.
Of your school. This is where the secondary School Report comes in handy. This item will come directly from your school counseling office and provide some context as to the classes that are available at your school.
Lastly, it does say optional next to resume and letters of recommendation. I always encourage students to submit those items as it provides additional context for who you are as a person. Butler takes a holistic approach to application review, so the more information you can provide, the more assistance that gives us as we make a final decision.
Starting in the fall of 2020, Butler will be accepting self reported test scores. You are able to self report those scores on your application for admission. As always, we will continue to accept test scores that are submitted directly from testing services or are included on your official high school transcript. If you choose to self report your test scores and plan to enroll at Butler, please know that students are required to have official test for sent from the testing services or from the high school transcript.
By July 1st prior to fall admission or December 1st prior to spring admission.
Our application opens every year on August 1st. Our first deadline is November 1st. November 1st is our early action deadline. Early action decisions will begin being released in late October, with all notifications released by mid December. February 1st is Butler's regular decision deadline and we will release those admission notifications by March 1st.
As we consider the cost of Education an investing in yourself, Please note that we will talk about direct and indirect cost. Direct costs include tuition, housing and meals which is also known as room and board as well as miscellaneous fees. The wrecked costs are billable expenses by the University and will appear on your student bill. You can see that total direct cost this year come to best.
For $58,000 we also do our best to estimate in direct us for expenses such as textbooks and transportation. Please know that that number is an estimate and will vary from person to person, but it is important to consider those additional expenses as you factor in the total cost of an education.

This means we are going to do what we can to lower that price for students. Every student that applies to Butler is automatically reviewed for academic scholarships alongside of admission. We will begin to send out financial aid notifications in early February for all admitted first year. An transfer students.
This financial aid notification will include not only academic scholarship information, but also need based aid determined by the FAFSA and any other Merit Awards you may receive. As previously mentioned, November 1st as butlers, early action deadline, early action is non binding so you are not committing yourself to Butler if you apply by this date, but you will receive maximum admission and scholarship consideration this year. Academic scholarships range from 11,000 to $22,000 per year, renewable for up to four years. Again, those academic scholarships are an automatic process that you will be considered for just by applying to the University.
During the 2018-2019 academic year, 96% of Butler students receive some form of Gift Aid. Most of this comes in the form of academic scholarships, but again, we will also consider you for need based aid as well as other Merit Awards.
As we wrap up today, I want to talk a little bit about life on campus.
I would encourage you to take advantage of the virtual tour option that we have on our website as we will be talking primarily about the holistic student experience and a little bit about residence halls.
First I would like to share with you a little bit about the BU. Be well model for a holistic student experience. Do you be well? Is a philosophy shared across campus at Butler? There are 8 dimensions that form be you. Be well as we create the foundation for a holistic student experience. The idea with BB well is to create opportunities for students to develop both inside of and outside of the classroom. So this would include an intellectual dimension as coursework in the academic experience of college.
Is very important, but we also focus on some other key dimensions such as mind and body, which would include both mental and physical health. Diversity and inclusion is also an important component to this BU be well model as we want to ensure that all students feel welcome and included at Butler University. The overall goal with BU be well is to ensure that we are fostering a positive learning environment to help students grow and become the best versions of themselves.
As we consider the physical spaces on campus. I want to talk about first year housing options. Students at Butler can choose from. 3 residence halls for their first year, Irvington House Ross Hall, an residential college, which we call Rezko for short. Irvington house and Rezko are both sweet style, meaning that you and your roommate. Farrah conjoined bathroom with two other people. Ross Hall is a more traditional style residence Hall, where you have one roommate in a shared bedroom space and share a restroom with others on your floor.
We are doing a lot to ensure that these housing options will comfortable an home like forest students. This includes some renovations to one of our residence halls.
In terms of those first, your housing options. As I mentioned, residential college or Rezko is one of the availabilities.
We are doing a lot to invest in this space by providing renovations to several key areas, including the dining space. Some of our residents suites the student lounges in the lobby, among other facilities. We want to ensure again that this is a home like space for our Butler students.
We have invested in some other areas on campus as well, including Irvington House, which is our newest housing facility that houses first year students. There are some cutting edge interior and exterior amenities in Irvington House. We also invested in our College of education by expanding to what is known as South campus, which not only provides additional innovative classroom spaces, but also in additional 40 acres of open green space.
Alicia School of Business was also a recent investment at Butler University as we constructed a brand new state of the art building featuring classrooms, a trading room, community gathering spaces and a rooftop deck.
Our latest investment is the science campus. The science campus will include new high tech classrooms labs that mimic top research companies and workspace is meant to encourage cross disciplinary collaboration. The science campus is estimated to be completed in December of 2022.
As we depart today, I want to share with you all one final piece of information. This information is about May 1st, May 1st is the national candidates replied date. This is the date where most universities across the country expect an answer about where you plan to attend. If you are admitted to Butler and are seriously considering attending, I would encourage you to pay the $500 enrollment deposit that secures your space in the first year class. This will also allow you access key items.
Enrollment such as the housing application, an new student registration.
If you change your mind and decide that Butler is not the best fit for you, that enrollment deposit is 100% refundable through this May 1st deadline.
